Hi everyone,
My name is Simon and I have set up this blog to talk about how Vladimir Lenin came to power in the Russian Revolution, and how he and the Bolsheviks both came to power.
Many people would be asking why I had chosen this topic of the Russian Revolution. Well, the reason is that I am Russian myself. Basically, my background is half Ukrainian and half Russian, with my dad being born in Kiev and my mum being born in Moscow. This means that both of my parents were brought under communisim, and it was very tough to get out of it. My dad was lucky, as he had got a Jewish sponsorship in Australia to go to Australia, but first he had to go to Italy. He stayed there for a couple of years, and then moved to Australia in 1979 (and he still can’t spell today, even with a real estate diploma under his belt in Australia).
My mum however was a different story, as she had to go down a different road. She had to go through a point system to get into Australia. She had to go through a point system in Russia, where she had to get 99% in an oral assessment with submitted paperwork. It included four categories, the main one being profession, and the other four being age (under 30, parents couldn't come), medical check, character and English. She got 99% because of PhD in Chemistry at Moscow State University, which was recognised as a university degree in Australia. She ended up finding a job on 5th day after arrival, as a visiting fellow at the school of material science and engineering at UNSW. She was never on the dole. The assessment worked as she found a job.
So, the reason why I had chosen this topic was because of the fact that they left a country built by the Bolsheviks and I want to find out more about them, and get more information than just the talks I have with my parents or when dad says “Oh, you never asked me about this.” You never told me about it either.
To find out how Lenin and the Bolsheviks came to power, I need to ask myself a few more questions:
What inspired Lenin to become how he was? (Marxism, karl marx heavily influenced him)
How did he live? (was he poor/rich, conditions he lived under)
How did the Bolsheviks overcome the Tsar’s army?
How were the Bolsheviks formed and who were they
These questions will help me answer how Lenin and the Bolsheviks came to power. But, to understand Lenin and the Bolsheviks, we must also understand the world he had lived in.
Lenin was born into a world where Tsars ruled Russia. This was a time when everything was kept to the Tsars and nothing was shared. It was like the French revolution, except in Russia. So not much was given to the peasants and the royal family owned everything.
Hope you have enjoyed reading the first post of this blog.
